Your brightening ritual
A complete morning and evening routine designed to support brighter, more even-looking skin.
Use once or twice a week in place of the toner step.
Four different problems, four different answers
Most people call all of it “pigmentation”. It isn't. Working out which one you have is the difference between a routine that works and one that frustrates you for a year.
Dullness
What it looks like
Skin that has gone flat and grey. No single spot you can point at — it has just lost its light.
Why it happens
Your skin sheds dead cells constantly, and that process slows as you get older. Those cells build up on the surface in an uneven layer, so light scatters off your face instead of reflecting evenly. Dehydration and a compromised barrier make it worse. So does a diet high in sugar, which stiffens collagen over time and adds a sallow cast.
What shifts it
Gentle, consistent exfoliation and hydration. This is the fastest-moving of the four — most people see a difference within two to three weeks.
Sun spots (solar lentigines)
What it looks like
Small, well-defined brown spots. Face, hands, chest, forearms — wherever you've caught the most sun. Usually appear from your forties onwards.
Why it happens
UV exposure triggers your skin to produce melanin as a defence. Do that for thirty years and clusters of pigment-producing cells become permanently overactive in patches. The spot you notice at 45 was earned in your twenties. In Australia this is the most common of the four by a wide margin.
What shifts it
Vitamin C, Niacinamide and patience. Expect eight to twelve weeks before you see the appearance of spots soften, and daily sunscreen or they will simply return.
Melasma
What it looks like
Larger, blotchy patches with soft edges, usually symmetrical across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.
Why it happens
Hormones plus light. Pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and HRT are common triggers, which is why it affects women far more than men. It is also set off by heat and by visible light — not just UV — so it can worsen through a car window, on an overcast day, or standing over a hot stove.
What shifts it
This is the stubborn one, and honesty serves you better than optimism. Melasma is managed rather than solved, it recurs, and it needs the most disciplined sun protection of the four. A tinted sunscreen with iron oxides gives protection against visible light that a clear sunscreen does not. If the pattern matches yours, see a dermatologist alongside your skincare routine.
Marks left after a breakout
What it looks like
Flat brown or pink marks exactly where a spot used to be. Not a scar — you can't feel any texture change.
Why it happens
Inflammation stimulates melanin. Anything that inflames the skin can do it — a breakout, picking, waxing, a treatment that was too aggressive. This is why squeezing makes things worse for months, not days.
What shifts it
Time and restraint. These fade on their own over three to twelve months. Niacinamide and Vitamin C speed up the appearance of fading. Picking resets the clock.
Four things arrive at once. Decades of accumulated UV exposure start to surface. Cell turnover slows, so dullness sets in faster and marks linger longer. Hormonal change through perimenopause alters how skin produces pigment. And the skin's own antioxidant defences weaken, so it copes less well with the same sun exposure it handled at thirty.
None of it is a failure of care. But it does mean the routine that worked at thirty will not hold the line at fifty.
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF. The single highest-impact thing you can do, by a distance. Every other step in this routine is undermined without it. UVA passes through window glass, so this applies to office days and long drives too.
- Vitamin C in the morning. An antioxidant that helps defend against the daily exposure that drives pigment in the first place, and visibly brightens as it goes.
- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3). Clinically proven to reduce hyperpigmentation, and it supports the barrier at the same time.
- Gentle enzyme exfoliation. Lifts the surface build-up that makes skin look flat, without the micro-tears that scrubs cause.
- Barrier support. A compromised barrier inflames easily, and inflammation makes pigment. Ceramides and a calm routine do more for tone than most people expect.
- Consistency over intensity. Eight to twelve weeks of a routine you actually follow beats three weeks of something aggressive that you abandon.
- Scrubs with sharp or gritty particles. The micro-tears cause inflammation, and inflammation causes more pigment. You will feel like you're doing something and make the problem worse.
- Over-exfoliating. More acid does not mean faster results. A stripped barrier inflames, and you go backwards.
- Picking and squeezing. Turns a spot that would have gone in a week into a mark that stays for six months.
- Unprotected sun through glass. Car windows and office windows block UVB but let UVA through. Melasma in particular often shows worse on the driver's side of the face.
- Imported skin-lightening creams. In Australia, products containing more than 2% hydroquinone are prescription-only medicines, and the TGA has issued safety alerts about imported skin-brightening products found to contain undeclared prescription substances. If a cream promises to lighten skin in days and you bought it online from overseas, do not put it on your face.
- Chasing “instant”. Melanin sits in layers of skin that take weeks to turn over. Anything promising to shift genuine pigment in days is either exfoliating hard or making it up.
- Sunscreen every day, all year, not just at the beach.
- A hat and shade between 10am and 3pm — sunscreen is the last line, not the only one.
- Treat inflammation early. The faster a breakout settles, the less mark it leaves.
- Keep the barrier intact. Fewer actives, used consistently, beat many used aggressively.
- Antioxidants in the morning, every morning.
- If you're starting or stopping hormonal contraception or HRT, expect your skin to shift, and hold your sun protection tighter through that window.

FAQs
Dullness lifts fastest — usually two to three weeks. The appearance of sun spots and post-breakout marks takes eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. Melasma is managed rather than resolved, and needs the longest view of all. If a product promises visible pigment change in a fortnight, be sceptical.
Naturally derived Vitamin C is more bio-compatible and far less irritating than synthetic ascorbic acid — no stinging, no flushing. Our Kakadu Plum Vitamin C Serum was formulated and tested on people with a history of skin sensitivity.
Yes, but not in the same step. Use the Enzyme Cleansing Grains to cleanse, then apply the serum to clean skin. If your skin is reactive, start the grains twice a week and build up.
Both, at different times. The Kakadu Plum Vitamin C Serum is your morning antioxidant step. The Brightening Facial Oil is an oil-soluble Vitamin C for overnight, applied last. If you only want one, start with the serum.
Our brightening range contains no retinol and no synthetic ascorbic acid. That said, melasma is often hormonally driven, and we would always ask you to check with your doctor or midwife before starting anything new during pregnancy.
Every product in this range is formulated and tested on a cohort with a history of skin sensitivity, including our founder. Start with the Essentials, introduce one product at a time, and give each a fortnight before adding the next.
We don't make them and we won't. Products that work by inhibiting melanin production are regulated as therapeutic goods in Australia, and several imported versions have been found to contain undeclared prescription substances. Our range brightens by lifting dullness, defending against daily exposure and helping the appearance of tone even out over time.
