Can You Over-Exfoliate? My Journey From Harsh Scrubs To Healthy Glow

Can You Over-Exfoliate? My Journey From Harsh Scrubs To Healthy Glow

By Ann Donnarumma, Owner of Founder’s Formula and former CEO of one of Australia’s largest beauty education businesses.

If you’d asked me twenty years ago what made a great exfoliator, I would have told you one thing.

You needed to feel it. The rougher, the better.

The more it scratched. The more it tingled. The more it left my face feeling tight and squeaky clean.

The more convinced I was that it was working.

Back then, I genuinely believed that if an exfoliator wasn’t taking layers off my skin, it wasn’t doing enough. And unfortunately, I wasn’t alone.

For years, the beauty industry taught us that glowing skin came from scrubbing harder, exfoliating more often and pushing our skin further.

Today, I know better. And if there’s one skincare mistake I wish I could take back, it’s over-exfoliating my skin.

The Exfoliation Obsession

For years, exfoliation was marketed as the secret to smooth, youthful-looking skin.

We were encouraged to use:

  • Crushed walnut shell exfoliants
  • Harsh facial scrubs
  • Apricot kernel scrubs
  • Strong acid peels
  • Daily exfoliating cleansers
  • Multiple exfoliating products at once

The message was simple.

More exfoliation equals better skin.... But skin doesn’t work that way.

What many of us didn’t realise was that we were slowly damaging the very thing responsible for healthy, glowing skin. Our skin barrier.

What Happens When You Over-Exfoliate?

Your skin barrier is the outermost protective layer of your skin.

Its job is to:

  • Lock in hydration
  • Defend against environmental stressors
  • Reduce irritation
  • Support healthy skin function
  • Maintain resilience and comfort

When that barrier is healthy, your skin looks radiant.

When it’s damaged, problems begin to appear.

Common signs of over-exfoliation include:

  • Redness
  • Tightness
  • Dryness
  • Flaking
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Stinging
  • Persistent irritation
  • Skin that suddenly reacts to products it once tolerated

Research has shown that excessive exfoliation can disrupt barrier function, increase water loss and contribute to chronic inflammation within the skin.

Ironically, many people begin exfoliating to improve their skin and end up creating the very concerns they are trying to fix.

The Truth About Harsh Scrubs

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that physical scrubs are harmless because they’re “natural.”

Many traditional exfoliators contain abrasive particles such as crushed walnut shells, apricot kernels or other rough ingredients.

The problem is that these particles are often irregular in shape.

Rather than gently polishing the skin, they can create tiny micro-injuries on the skin’s surface.

You may not see them, but your skin feels them.

Over time, repeated trauma can contribute to:

  • Sensitivity
  • Redness
  • Barrier disruption
  • Increased inflammation

For mature skin, which naturally becomes thinner and more fragile with age, aggressive scrubbing can be particularly problematic.

Can You Have Too Much Of A Good Thing?

The same principle applies to chemical exfoliation.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid and lactic acid have been extensively studied and can absolutely improve skin texture, brightness and the appearance of ageing skin when used appropriately.

The issue isn’t the ingredient.

It’s the way many of us use them.

Today it’s common to see routines that combine:

  • AHAs
  • BHAs
  • Retinol
  • Exfoliating cleansers
  • Professional treatments
  • At-home peels

All at the same time.

While each product may be beneficial individually, the cumulative effect can be significant.

The result? A compromised skin barrier disguised as a skincare routine.

The Glow I Was Looking For Wasn’t In More Scrubbing

One of the biggest turning points in my skincare journey came when I stopped asking:

“How can I remove more skin?”

And started asking:

“How can I support healthier skin?”

Because healthy skin naturally glows.

Healthy skin reflects light.

Healthy skin looks smoother, brighter and more radiant.

Without needing to be scrubbed raw.

That mindset shift led me to discover enzyme exfoliation, and I haven’t looked back.

Why I Fell In Love With Wild Pandanus Enzyme Grains

Wild Pandanus Enzyme Grains were created around a very different philosophy.

Exfoliation should support the skin, not punish it.

Instead of relying on harsh abrasive particles, Wild Pandanus uses gentle enzymatic exfoliation to help dissolve and lift away dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.

The experience is completely different.

There’s no scratching. No harsh grit. No feeling like you’ve sandpapered your face.

Just beautifully refined skin.

Every time I use it, I notice:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Increased radiance
  • Softer skin
  • Better product absorption
  • A healthy, natural glow

Most importantly, my skin feels comfortable afterwards.

Not tight.  Not irritated. Not stripped.

Comfortable.

Why Enzymes Work Differently

Unlike physical scrubs that rely on friction, enzymes work by helping break down the proteins that hold dead skin cells together on the skin’s surface.

This allows those cells to be removed more gently and evenly.

The result is effective exfoliation with significantly less disruption to the skin barrier.

For women experiencing:

  • Sensitivity
  • Redness Dryness
  • Hormonal skin changes
  • Ageing skin concerns

This gentler approach can make a remarkable difference.

What I’ve Learned About Exfoliation

If I could go back and give my younger self one piece of skincare advice, it would be this:

Stop trying to force your skin to glow.

For years, I believed more discomfort meant better results.

More scrubbing.
More acids.
More treatments.
More irritation.

Today, I know the opposite is often true. The most beautiful skin I’ve ever had has come from supporting my skin, not fighting it.

Wild Pandanus Enzyme Grains have completely changed the way I exfoliate.

They deliver the glow I was chasing all those years ago.

Without the redness. Without the irritation. Without the damage.

Because great skincare shouldn’t leave your skin feeling worse before it gets better.

It should leave your skin looking healthy, radiant and beautifully cared for from the very beginning.
